The company wants to make the robotaxi available to customers through the Lyft app by 2023.  

Hyundai will assemble purpose-built vehicles by integrating Motional’s autonomous vehicle technology. The suite will include more than 30 sensors including radar, lidar, and cameras that see the interior and exterior. Its sensing system provides 360 degrees of vision, according to Motional, and the ability to see up to 300 meters away.  

In a recent interview, Karl Iagnemma, president and CEO, said born out of a $4 billion joint venture with Aptiv and Hyundai, Motional intentionally showcases the numerous sensors.  

“We see so many competitors bending over backward to try to hide this sensor suite and conceal it in these big plastic casings,” Iagnemma told.  

“And the fact is, you can’t hide the sensors. They need to be where they need to be and they’re an important part of the car and a key part of the technology. So, our strategy was to celebrate the sensors, and to adapt the design language of the vehicle and carry that through the design of the integrated sensor suite.”  

The company has still not announced the launch dates and place for its first driverless Robotaxi service. However, it will likely be on cities including Boston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh, some cities they are currently testing in.  

Lagnemma said that their research shows that the majority of ride-hailing trips are for two or fewer passengers. However, for Motional’s use case, loniq 5 is the right size vehicle.  

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be the first vehicle based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), their dedicated electric battery vehicle platform.   

The vehicle is equipped with an 800-volt electrical system. This system was debuted in Porsche Taycan, it is lighter, efficient, and allows the vehicle to charge faster. This will be fast-charging rate will be an important feature for robotaxi service.  

Iagnemma said the robotaxi version of the Ioniq 5 will be assembled by Hyundai, a noteworthy detail.

Last year, in September, to join in this trend, Hyundai Capital, an auto financing firm, has launched an artificial intelligence-powered mobile platform named Check. The mobile platform aims to helps consumers avoid low-quality used cars which are often called lemons and picked peaches.  

In the platform, users can just type in a vehicle’s registration number which will then show them its fair price as well as its recent sale price concerning the same vehicle model with similar conditions.  

The company said, “the used car mobile platform has been gaining popularity among consumers who want to buy affordable, quality used cars without being scammed.”  

In the past five months, according to the financial firm since the launch of the platform the average monthly page views have surpassed 120,000.   

 The platform is the first of its kind and uses an AI algorithm to price used cars. The algorithm was jointly developed with researchers from Seoul National University. It works by assessing the value of used cars by analyzing the mileage, production year, accident records, and engine displacement. Lastly, its service gets updated with the use of car prices from online bids.

 On the platform, every month around 300,000 used cars are put up for sale. Check also informs subscribers about the expected selling prices in the next three years. It also helps users find and apply for car loan programs.  

 “Check is designed to help address pain points of consumers who can easily fall victim to used car scams due to the lack of reliable market data, and give used car buyers easy access to automotive financing products,” said An Dong-chan, a vice president at the auto-financing firm.

They are rolling out their new platform across all new models from Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia, starting from 2022 onwards.

“Now, we are once again transforming these systems through the power of AI, helping Hyundai Motor Group increase safety and value, along with enhancing customer satisfaction, throughout the lifetime of the vehicle.”   

The technical collaboration between the two companies, Hyundai and Nvidia, enables them to develop high-performance connected car computing systems for Hyundai next-generation models.   

In the future, all car models of Hyundai starting from entry-level to premium vehicles will feature in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems powered by Nvidia Drive.   

Nvidia Drive will include a software and a hardware stack which will enable Hyundai’s IVI systems to combine their navigation, audio and video, connectivity, and AI-based car services.  

Also, the Nvidia Drive platform is high-performance and energy-efficient meaning utilizing it for its future models will allow Hyundai to offer customers seamless and enhanced in-vehicle AI user experiences.   

In the future, the customers of Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia will benefit from a feature-rich AI user experience.  

The two companies have been working together since 2015 on this project. Nvidia Drive platform underpins the advanced IVI systems which can also be found in the Genesis GV80 and G80.   

Besides, the two companies have collaborated on an advanced digital cockpit which will be launched late in 2021. This announcement will take the relationship between the two further, as Hyundai lays the foundations for IVI systems that support a wide range of features and apps across its entire model line-up.
