This year, the world’s premier tech show has shifted online due to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the organizers are offering an engaging platform for companies to offer a platform to build brands, launch products, and form partnerships.   

The show features more than 1,000 exhibitors showcasing the latest trends and innovation in artificial intelligence, smart cities, digital health, vehicle tech, 5G, and beyond from around the world.  

Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), said “CES 2021 will be making history, with our first all-digital show.” Further adding, “Technology will move us forward and CES 2021 will illustrate how innovation paves the way for a brighter tomorrow,” he said.  

Some exhibitors for CES 2021 includes Hisense, Canon, Intel, LG Electronics, TCL, Lenovo, Sony, Samsung Electronics, Panasonic, Philips, and Voxx. Non-traditional tech companies including Caterpillar, Bridgestone, John Deere, L’Oreal, Indy Autonomous Challenge, and P&G.

With the platform gone digital, audiences can experience CES through cutting-edge technologies, an online platform they could hear from technology innovators, the digital venue, the latest product launches, and engage with global brands from around the world.  

During the four-day show from Monday to Thursday, keynote speeches and more than 100 conference sessions will be held online.  

 “An all-digital CES 2021 will allow the entire tech community to safely share ideas and introduce the products that will shape our future,” said the CTA.  

Michiel Hulsbergen, CEO and co-founder of DialogueTrainer, told Xinhua they will showcase its online simulations, “As an online training company, the year has had quite an impact on us. As Covid changes the way we interact, including how we manage people, how we communicate in general, and how we learn from each other, we expect a lot of openness to new solutions.”

DiNG, a Los Angeles-based startup focused on reinventing food delivery, also expects to learn about new food tech trends by connecting with potential partners at CES 2021.  

Last year, many Chinese companies participated in CES for brand building and partnerships. They were the top in international market at CES. However, the Chinese companies saw decrease participation this year affected by the pandemic.  

For the past 50 years, CES has been a platform for innovation for innovators from around the world.  

In New York City, CES first started in 1967 with 250 exhibitors and 17,500 attendees. Since then, the world’s premier tech show has only grown by 10-fold and encompasses traditional and non-traditional tech industries.

In March, Apple released this new COVID-19 screening tool of ioS users as a resource for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Apple’s tool is a dedicated website that enables its users to diagnose symptoms quickly and immediately take action against the virus. 

Today’s update has bought new questions about the severity, symptom, and COVID-19 test results. The new questions offering its users more granularity in tracking the virus, thus providing more accurate advice such as when to visit a healthcare professional.   

Besides, the new update also includes unspecified performance improvements and bug fixes.  

The company last provided new updates for its screening tool in June with the ability to anonymously share submitted data with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other state public health agencies.   

At the time of release, the company said that they will be using data such as symptoms, age, and other to help health officials better understand the virus and to improve the app.  

In its last update, the company added self-care guidance and changes to COVID-19 symptom tracking.

While working on the screening app and accompanying website, the company worked with the Coronavirus Task Force, the CDC, and FEMA. The two major reasons behind the app are to help ease the burden of an overloaded U.S. healthcare system and to deliver information about the virus.  

This is Apple’s independent project and should be considered as the Apple-Google Exposure Notification system because they both are separate projects.

According to Fujitsu, the AI-based monitor can not only recognize the complex hand movements but also detect if people are using soap or not. The monitor was under development even before the coronavirus outbreak for implementing stricter hygiene regulations by Japanese companies. Also, AI-based uses crime surveillance technology to detect suspicious body movements.

Genta Suzuki, a senior researcher at the Japanese IT company said “Food industry officials and those involved in a coronavirus-related business who have seen it are eager to use it, and we have had people inquiring about price.” He added, Fujitsu is yet to decide formally if they want to market AI technology.

Despite the economic fallout hurting companies due to the coronavirus pandemic ranging from restaurants to carmakers, firms are trying to use existing technology to tap into an emerging market for coronavirus-related products.

 AI of the Tokyo based company checks if people are completing a six-step hand washing procedure by the Japanese health ministry. It refers to the guidelines issued by the WHO to ask people to clean their palms, between fingers, wash their thumbs, around the wrists, and scrub their fingernails.

Suzuki said that the AI monitor still can’t identify people from their hands. However, it can be coupled with identity recognition technology for companies to track employees’ washing habits.

Suzuki and other developers successfully created nearly 2,000 handwashing patterns using different soaps and washbasins to train the machine learning AI. The company’s employees also took part in those trials. They also paid people in Japan and overseas to wash their hands to help develop the AI.

It can now be programmed to play Happy Birthday or other music to accompany hand washing. But, Suzuki said, that it will be up to the customer.

This app is a joint initiative between telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom AG and software developer SAP SE. The main goal of the new tracing app is to help break the chain of infection in initial time to allow the country to effectively manage its return to normal.

The new COVID-Warn-App was made available to download for both Android and Apple devices overnight. It uses Bluetooth short-range radio to monitor close contacts between people. If one of them tests positive it issues a warning that the other should be also tested.

Ahead of a launch event in Berlin, Jens Spahn, Health Minister, told ZDF public television “Everyone who downloads the app, and everyone who encourages friends to do so, is making a difference.”

Similar to other European countries such as Poland, Italy, and Switzerland, Germany in launching this app based on Apple and Alphabet’s Google’s technology. The technology protects the user’s privacy by storing Bluetooth logs securely on devices.

In April, the project going almost went off-track with Berlin’s abandonment of the initial approach that stored data on a central server as it allowed people’s relationships to be spied on said privacy experts.
