When stating the latest model, he said, “It is not inferior in any aspect to GPT-4. Significantly improved compared to its original Ernie Bot model.”

Baidu’s Future Plan for the AI Model

Baidu is amongst the competitors in the AI race, racing to come up with artificial intelligence models. This is after OpenAI’s ChatGPT was introduced last year and people were hooked to it. China sees AI as a potential industry to rival the US and aims to become a global leader by 2030.
Baidu began its journey as a search engine firm and over the last few years has invested significantly in AI technology such as autonomous driving and now, generative AI to meet the competition.
It introduced Ernie Bot in March and made it available to the public in August 2023. Ernie 4.0 is not available to the public yet but some people are invited to try it. Also, following the announcement of Baidu’s share price fell 1.7% which is a bit unexpected.
Li also mentioned that the company plans to incorporate AI into its search engine, maps, and cloud drive services, and its business intelligence services for enterprise customers. However, he did not mention the timeline or any other information for the same.

Final Thoughts

Baidu is trying to compete with US tech giants like Google’s AI Chatbot Bard and Microsoft’s Dall-E 3. However, US sanctions on China’s access to advanced chips to train the AI models along with Beijing’s stringent censorship can create issues for them. They also have domestic rivals like ByteDance Ltd and Tencent to make things difficult for them.

Open AI, on Monday, 25th September, announced a new feature that’ll let you have a voice chat with ChatGPT. This feature will allow users to speak aloud to ChatGPT and hear the chatbot talk back.

Open AI shared a demo of the new update showing the feature in action. In it, the user asks ChatGPT to create a story about “the super-duper sunflower hedgehog named Larry.” The chatbot then presented a story out loud with a human-sounding voice that could also respond to questions, such as, “What was his house like?” and “Who is his best friend?”

This new voice feature is similar to those currently offered by Amazon Alexa or Apple’s voice assistant Siri.

How You Can Enable the Voice And Image Features?

OpenAI unveils ChatGPT’s latest feature to Plus and Enterprise users which is coming in the next two weeks. Voice will be available on iOS and Android and images will be available on all platforms.

To enable the voice feature, you can go to Settings, then tap on New Features on the mobile app and opt-in for voice conversations. Then, tap the headphone button located in the top-right corner of the home screen and choose your preferred voice out of five different voices.

The new voice capability works using a new text-to-speech model, capable of generating human-like audio from just text and a few seconds of sample speech. The company added that it is uniting with professional voice artists to create the five different voices. They are also using Whisper, an open-source speech recognition system, to transcribe spoken words into text.

Chat About the Images

You can now show one or more images to ChatGPT and inquire about your problems. Users can also use the drawing tool in the app to focus on specific parts of the image.

To get started, tap the photo button to click or select an image. If you’re on iOS or Android, tap the plus button first. You can also discuss multiple images or use the drawing tool to guide the assistant.

The understanding of the images is generated by multimodal GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. These models apply their language reasoning skills to a wide range of images, such as photographs, screenshots, and documents containing both text and images.

Who Will Win the AI Race?

In the previous week, Microsoft presented its unified AI assistant and Google updated Bard to its Applications. Furthermore, Amazon also made a deal with Anthropic. It is noteworthy to see how these updates are coming out in the same timeline. The race continues and new features keep adding up for users to enjoy and employ in their daily lives.

Tell us your thoughts on the latest features from OpenAI and whether you will be using the features in your daily tasks.

Authors Guild and many noteworthy writers filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court on Tuesday, 19th September. The writers sued OpenAI over alleged copyright infringement in using their books to train ChatGPT. This group of writers filing the OpenAI copyright infringement case includes Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, and Jodi Picoult.
The writers alleged that OpenAI copied the plaintiff’s works wholesale without permission or providing consideration. Also, fed the plaintiff’s copyrighted material into their large language models or LLMs’ algorithms designed to provide text responses to user’s queries.

Details of the OpenAI Copyright Infringement Lawsuit and OpenAI’s Response

Apart from allegations of using copyrighted content to train their language models, the Authors Guild’s lawsuit also alleges acts of piracy. It claims that the datasets used to train OpenAI’s models include texts from authors’ books that may be pirated off of the internet. Further, the authors claimed that ChatGPT can summarize their books with extreme accuracy. This would indicate that OpenAI’s database might include their books.
In response to the allegations, an OpenAI spokesperson said that scraping the internet for the use of training data qualifies as fair use under U.S. copyright law. They also said that the company respects authors’ rights and is “having productive conversations with many creators around the world, including the Authors Guild.”

OpenAI’s Battle with Writers

Michael Chabon, David Henry Hwang, Rachel Louise Snyder, and Ayelet Waldman filed a lawsuit on Friday, 8th September. They alleged that OpenAI is profiting from the ‘unauthorized and illegal use’ of their copyrighted work.
The lawsuit is pursuing class-action status and called out on ChatGPT’s ability to sum up and analyze the authors’ content. They stated that this is only possible if OpenAI trained its GPT LLMs on their works. The writers further added that the outputs from ChatGPT are derivative or imitative works that infringe on their copyrights.
In July, two authors Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad filed a complaint saying ChatGPT creates very accurate summaries of their works. They alleged that this is possible if ChatGPT was trained on their books.

The Hidden Pattern Behind AI Tools

It is common knowledge these days about how popular AI tools work using algorithms and patterns. But, the lesser known, hidden patterns that AI makers are following are damaging artists. These big tech companies are allegedly ignoring the copyright behind original art and creating their tools to make billions.
With so many artists and writers coming out against these big-name AI tools, the industry is up for a major change in policies and regulations. So, companies like OpenAI will have to do more than just introduce privacy control features and call it a day.
Starting with delivering justice to independent artists. That’s because the lawsuits by the authors are requesting the courts to stop OpenAI from employing ‘unlawful and unfair business practices’ while providing damages to the authors relating to copyright violations and other penalties.
Any regulations to avoid the alleged misuse are still up for debate.

A new evolution is taking place in today’s era i.e. AI evolution. The only reason everybody is betting on the AI industry after the Open AI game-changing tool ChatGPT. Evolution is good in every aspect, but it also brings some other destructive things with it. Hence, AI regulation is important for the masses.

For the same, the Biden administration will hold a meeting to collect “voluntary Commitments” from 7 of the top AI firm developers to attain shared security and transparency goals ahead of a planned Executive Order.

Since Open AI’s tool ChatGPT, the AI Industry has been moving at lightning speed. Everybody including journalists and the White House has been worried that it should not get carried away. The Top AI Companies will be taking part in the non-binding agreement and send their representatives to the White House to meet with President Biden today. The Names of the companies are OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon.

To be clear, no rule or enforcement is being suggested here. The agreed-upon procedures are entirely optional. However, if a business avoids a few, no government agency will hold it accountable, and it will probably be public knowledge.

Following is a list of members to visit the White House:

  • Brad Smith, President, Microsoft
  • Kent Walker, President, Google
  • Dario Amodei, CEO, Anthropic
  • Mustafa Suleyman, CEO, Inflection AI
  • Nick Clegg, President, Meta
  • Greg Brockman, President, OpenAI
  • Adam Selipsky, CEO, Amazon Web Services

The Guidelines and Suggestions Made

The above seven firms and others who want to join have committed to the following:

    • Before release, AI systems undergo internal and external security checks, including aggressive “red teaming” by independent specialists outside the company.

    • Information on AI threats and mitigation strategies (such as preventing “jailbreaking”) should be shared between the government, academia, and “civil society”.

    • To safeguard private model data like weights, make investments in cybersecurity and “insider threat safeguards”. This is crucial not only to safeguard intellectual property but also because an opportunity for malicious actors could arise from an early widespread release.

    • Help third parties find and report vulnerabilities, for example, through a bug bounty program or a domain expert analysis.

    • Create reliable watermarking or another method of marking content produced by AI.

    • The “capabilities, limitations, and areas of appropriate and inappropriate use” of AI systems should be reported. You’ll have a hard time getting an honest response to this.

    • Prioritize research studies on societal dangers like systematic bias or privacy concerns as a top priority.

    • Create and implement AI “to help address society’s greatest challenges” like cancer prevention and climate change. (However, it was mentioned in a press call that the carbon impact of AI models was not being monitored.)

Even though the above-mentioned actions are optional, it is easy to conceive that the threat of an Executive Order, which they are currently developing, exists to encourage compliance. For instance, the E.O. may create language instructing the FTC to carefully examine AI products that claim robust security if some companies refuse to permit external security testing of their models before release. (One E.O. is already in effect and requests that agencies be vigilant against bias in the creation and application of AI.)

A Step Towards Responsible AI Development by Leading Companies

The White House wants to be ahead of the next AI revolution by monitoring and understanding the AI threats that may come along with the massive wave of technology. Both the President and the Vice President have met with business executives to seek their input on a national AI strategy and are allocating a sizeable amount of funds to new AI research facilities and initiatives.

Also, this is a good move to safeguard the beneficiaries along with a hope to control the AI revolution. If attained, it will be a fall well handled!

Google Bard in its latest update has included 40 more languages and many more. From voice integration to seamless integration from Google services, Google has made sure to include all in its AI chatbot Bard. You can now use Bard in additional languages and nations, customize responses, add images to your prompts, and do a variety of other things.

Bard’s History

Google Bard, a competitor to Open AI’s ChatGPT, was launched on March 21, 2023. Since then, it has been constantly updated by the company. The platform has received an update on boosting the user’s productivity and receiving customized responses. Bard is constantly working on making itself better than its competitors. It has increased its reach by being available in the most widely spoken language.
Let’s have a look at the new features that Google has added to Bard.

More Customized Responses

You may now listen to Bard’s comments starting today. This is very useful if you want to hear how to pronounce a word correctly or listen to a poem or script. To hear Bard’s responses, simply type a prompt and click the sound icon.

Bard’s comments can also be altered in five distinct ways: basic, long, short, professional, or informal. You can use the drop-down to shorten Bard’s response when you request it to write a marketplace listing for an antique armchair. This functionality is currently available in English and will be expanded to other languages shortly.

Boost Your Productivity

After listening to the users, Bard enabled the option to go back and review prompts. When you start a topic, the sidebar now includes options to pin, rename, and pick up recent discussions. For example, if we ask Bard to compare summer sports, it goes back and evaluates its opinion afterward.

Additionally, the use of Bard for coding jobs continues to be popular. So, in addition to Google Colab, Google Bard will be releasing a new feature on the 13th of July. It’ll allow you to export Python code to Replit.

Further in productivity improvements, sharing a portion or all of your Bard talk with your network has been made simpler. You can share your thoughts and projects with others by using shareable links.

A significant element of how we use our imaginations is through images. Google announced at I/O that it will be integrating Google Lens features into Bard. This will allow you to upload photographs with prompts and Bard will analyze the photo to aid you. Whether you want additional information about an image or just need help coming up with a caption. Unlike other features, this is only available in English, and it will be expanded to other languages soon.

Final Word

Technological advancements are happening every single day, new updates are being rolled out each day, new competitors are coming, and whatnot. Each platform is trying hard to be more customer-centric by providing them with the best they can. What do you think about these new updates? Will Google’s Bard be able to capture more market share? We’ll have to wait and see

The most recent information indicates that OpenAI, the business that started the AI race with the highly effective chatbot ChatGPT, has established a specialized team to oversee and manage ‘super-intelligent’ AI systems. Ilya Sutskever, one of the organization’s founders and chief researcher, was appointed head.

According to an OpenAI blog post, AI capable of outperforming the human mind could come within a decade. At the same time, it is not required for this ‘supermind’ to be beneficial to humans; consequently, methods of controlling and limiting the powers of such systems must be developed.

Super-intelligent AI cannot yet be managed or controlled in a way that prevents aggression on its behalf, claims OpenAI. Existing artificial intelligence optimization systems rely on human feedback-based reinforcement learning. Simultaneously, such strategies are dependent on the assumption that humans can, in theory, regulate AI. Which is doubtful for systems that are potentially more intelligent than humans. A specialized team will have access to 20% of the company’s computing resources to study this issue. Scientists and programmers from the company’s AI customization section and other departments are also there. The team hopes to master the key technical hurdles connected with directing super-intelligent AI during the next four years.

We’re discussing the use of feedback in AI training. To assess other AI systems, provide the needed outcomes, and ensure their operational reliability, a unique AI is used. OpenAI believes AI will manage this more quickly and effectively than humans. Companies are anticipated to take on an increasing number of activities as artificial intelligence develops, necessitating the development and application of better adaptation technologies than those that are currently available. They will collaborate with humans to better adapt their generations. Also, to the requirements of humans, who are merely serving as supervisors and not taking part in the actual study.

Future of Superintelligent AI

As mentioned in OpenAI, no approach has absolute error prevention. Using one AI to evaluate others might increase the number of faults and vulnerabilities in the AIs developed. This indicates that the most difficult portion of customization is related to the most unexpected aspects of how the AI functions. However, the company argues that optimizing superintelligence is primarily a machine-learning task.  Therefore, experts in this field will be critical. In the future, the business intends to share the findings of its research with others. In order to establish and secure initiatives, including those unconnected to OpenAI.

The attempt’s critics assert that AI could surpass human intellect even before it commits to protecting the security of other AI systems, according to Reuters. In an open letter published in April, experts and business pioneers issued a strong warning against developing an AI that is more advanced than GPT-4.

You can now surf the web through ChatGPT on mobile, but only through Bing, thanks to the most recent upgrade. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Plus users can use a new function called Browsing to look up information on Bing.

OpenAI also added drag-and-drop functions to the ChatGPT app for iOS and iPadOS earlier this month. Individual messages can now be dragged and dropped into other applications.

How It’s Done

Both the iOS and Android ChatGPT apps now support browsing. You can enable browsing by selecting GPT-4 in the model switcher and then browsing from the new features section. To do that, you need to choose Browse with Bing from the drop-down menu.

According to OpenAI, browsing is useful to get up to speed with current events and search for information outside of the bot’s original training material. Originally, ChatGPT’s database has only been updated until 2021. If you turn off the browsing feature, the AI will revert back to the original database.

Is Microsoft Restricting CHATGPT?

ChatGPT has evolved into a more useful browsing assistant, which Microsoft and OpenAI originally claimed to be available this year. However, limiting ChatGPT’s search possibilities to Bing seems like a bottleneck. But, OpenAI has a tight partnership with Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion in the firm. The commercial incentives appear to be evident here.

To add to that, Bing is far from the be-all and end-all of search engines.

In 2011, an investigation revealed that Bing may have been unfairly favoring Microsoft results over Google links. More recently, Stanford researchers discovered an alarming amount of disinformation in Bing’s top search results.

Looking Past the Limitations

When trying to sum up lengthy research papers or having a question about a specific topic, ChatGPT’s browsing feature is really helpful. What’s more, you can provide the exact link to the research topics while posing the query. It should be noted, though, that if the bot cannot access the content directly, it may produce problems. This typically happens when a website provides a link to the PDF integrated inside it or has a scanned copy of the information. If the information is directly accessible from the website and easily accessible, you’ll get the answer you need.

Conclusion

As more people start using ChatGPT daily, the new mobile app addition will boost its popularity. And, when compared to Google and DeepMind’s Gemini, ChatGPT stands tall as our current pick for the best AI Chatbot.

After all, an automobile is a rather strictly regulated place. A voice interface is occasionally the safest or best way to perform fundamental automobile functions like driving, navigation, and media control while keeping one’s eyes on the road.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, specializes in appearing human while producing new facts to keep the discussion moving along when engaging in a back-and-forth on any subject.

An Added Layer of Security through Voice Assistant

Users will have access to a voice assistant that can carry on a conversation in addition to responding to natural voice commands. With their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road, participants will soon be able to query the Voice Assistant for more information. This includes requesting assistance with a difficult problem, a new supper recipe, or directions. Customers can sign up through the Mercedes Me app or by saying into their car, “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program.”

For a standard voice interface, a question like “What’s a good independent sandwich shop on my route that’s within half a mile of a petrol station” would be too challenging. If you don’t have a passenger to look that up for you, having that feature would be helpful. Who requests a recipe for a fresh supper when traveling? Is that the best use case they could come up with?

What Benefits will it Deliver?

The “Hey Mercedes” voice command feature of the MBUX Voice Assistant will become even more user-friendly with the addition of ChatGPT. The benefits of the technology are, as usual, a bit speculative, and it’s safe to assume that no driver asked for this feature. It’s possible that Mercedes is simply too worn out to manage its voice interface service and would prefer to hand it off to someone else.

Customers can sign up using the Mercedes Me app or by saying the phrase “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program” into their car. The beta program will be sent out over the radio. By utilizing the business-grade features of Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform, Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT through Azure OpenAI Service.

The voice command information gathered is anonymized and analyzed before being stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud.

Mercedes Benz engineers will gain important knowledge about specific requirements, enabling them to specify precise goals for improving voice control. The beta test comments will be used to further refine the user-friendly voice assistant, and a plan will be chosen for deploying large language models in new markets and languages.

Conclusion

ChatGPT can improve the driving experience by offering information, support, and back-and-forth talks, even though the precise use cases for it in a regulated car environment are still unknown. The use of technology may be advantageous for tasks like locating nearby amenities or resolving issues while the driver is still paying attention to the road. Mercedes hopes to improve the voice assistant through beta testing, customer input and investigate broader deployment in various regions and languages.
